It's hard for me to find a good Kimchi Chigae, but they do it pretty darn right here. They got the spice ratio just right...leaves you burning in a good way. They're attentive, friendly and always willing to explain an item to non-Korean speaking folk.
The meat dishes are always tender and flavourful, the soups are huge portions and filling...I always leave here stuffed to the brim, without having spent an arm and a leg. Always plenty of parking in the plaza. -

The food here is terrible we took one bite and the beef was tough. And the rice was complete mush! We told them we didn't like anything about the food and wanted to leave. We eat Korean food at least 3 times a week so we do know what is good and what is not. I am now being held hostage and waiting for the police to come because we don't want to pay for this inedible slop! Do not eat here!
The bulgogi was dry and tough, the steamed rice was purple and complete mush. The sides looked like they have been sitting there since the restaurant opened. -

We made the trek out to Coquitlam for some authentic home-style Korean food. It's on the corner of the strip mall with plenty of parking around.
Onto the food!
1. Pork belly and beef short ribs to BBQ at our table. Fresh, never frozen pork belly - pretty tender and flavourful. The beef short ribs were better IMO. 4/5
2. Pork bone soup - hearty and delicious broth with potatoes, this'll warm you right up. 4/5
3. Seafood pancake - fluffy but fell apart. Lacked some flavour. Not one of the better seafood pancakes I've had. 3/5
4. Beef bulgogi japchae - 3/5
5. Bottle of sochu
Kimchi is extra $ unless you order a specific combo of BBQ meat.
We shared these items between 3 and were stuffed to the max with some leftovers. Bill came to around $100 for everything, a bit pricey for Korean food. -

Food is very So-so, looks like the place is past their prime. I had the pork hot pot and my wife Tofu Jigae (soup).
Both had way too much msg, and portion size was good but pricier than comparable home style Korean places.
It's a shame, I really wanted to like this place - we saw lots of people coming in for lunch (older folks) but for us msg is a sign people take shortcuts.
Hope they read this and get better. -

Oh how the mighty has fallen! When my then-fiancee and I found Jeong Ga Nae a few years ago, we were so impressed with the restaurant that we brought our two-sided family to have their first pre-wedding meet up dinner here. My husband's parents drove from Surrey while my parents drove from Burnaby to try it out. Fast forward 2 years of engagement and 1 year of marriage, my husband and I now avoid Jeong Ga Nae despite living 5 minute walking distance from it. We recently gave it a try once again and the mighty has definitely fallen off it's rockers.
First of all, the prices had skyrocketed to take into account the increasing attention it is receiving from foreign customers that don't realize that prices shouldn't be that high. 17 dollars for a grilled fish + doenjang jjigae? I don't think so. How about $13 instead. The prices in comparison to teo yo il (TEO) which is in the same vicinity of Coquitlam Centre is astounding. There's a reason why TEO is doing so much better in terms of price & taste and why it's so much more popular with locals.
Second of all, taste. It was an extremely hot day when my husband and I went to Jeong ga nae and I was really not feeling it for any jjigae or tang (hot soup based) items, so I opted for a deol ssot bibimbap instead, something that is so generic and symbolic that I figured no restaurant could screw up. Oh how I was wrong! The vegetables were cut up very largely that wouldn't go well for a dish that should be mixed up and eaten altogether. I also noticed right off the bat that the vegetables were not seasoned well. I make bibimbap occasionally for my husband at home and so I know that you should season the vegetables going into a bimbap less than what you would usually season it with as a banchan (side dish), BUT you still need to season it. My mother-in-law would be absolutely horrified if she had what I ate that day.
The vegetables in my bibimbap was so bland that I really did consider asking the owner/waitress to give me some salt to season it myself. But I figured that it would almost be impossible for me to separate what needed to season and what I should leave as it. The only thing that was seasoned in the bimbap slightly was the beef that was given (oh thank god). No miso soup or soup of any kind was given together with the rather expensive and not so tasty bibimbap, so that's another point lost there.
I devoured the banchan given along the side while eating my bibimbap that i had to drench with gochujang because I didn't have much of a taste from the vegetables, and the only reason why I devoured the banchan was that I needed some sort of salt/sugary taste to go with my bland meal. Unfortunately, the banchan was also overcooked (*facepalm). It was then that I decided that I don't think I'll be returning to Jeon Ga Nae in the near future. It really doens't matter that I live 5 minutes walking distance from it, but it's obviously lost it's quality and quantity, and it just doesn't cut it for me anymore.
